hmmm… what are you sewing that is sewn front to back? usually you put front to front, so it is all facing the same direction! :)
i love my seam ripper! just in case. I also buy the ready-to-go bobbins in black/white – makes it much easier… and always have ‘charcoal’ thread – my MIL told me it matches everything, and it really almost does!
hehe oh.. I meant to say that!!!
I don’t even know what a seam ripper is! haha
Charcoal thread!! Great idea!
Ready to go bobbins! I had no idea those even existed!
Is the charcoal a dark gray?
Yes a dark gray!
I know.. I had no idea they excited either!
Oh! I was going to say the seam ripper. We have a Sewing 101 tab on our blog with lots of good ideas, if you want to check it out.

I’d also add pins, a pin cushion (magnetic is awesome for cleaning up pin spills, a hen gauge, 24 x 6 quilting ruler, rotary cutter, and a self healing cutting mat. I’d also suggest forking out the big bucks for Gingher scissors. They are freaking awesome, and they’ll last forever. Do NOT use them for anything but fabric, though.

I’ll go check out the link! Thanks so much :)
Lots of great stuff!! I added them to my list! Now to Google a few of those things HAHAHA :)
I’m wondering if anybody uses tracing paper or a tracer. Or is that out dated?
Good question. :)
An iron!! You must have an iron. I hate having to haul it out every time (no dedicated craft/sewing room here), but it makes life so much easier. So just get it out.
I’m just a casual/new sewer, and the only thing I have in the updated #2 list are the pins, cushion and a good pair of scissors. I’d love the rotary stuff, but I don’t have it and do fine. Those may be more “nice to have” than “essentials”.
I have an el-cheapo (hehe) iron… Do you think that will do the trick?
Depends on what you’re going to sew…but if you’re considering quilting, it is worth investing in a 45 mm (at least) rotary cutter, an acrylic ruler (at least 6 in square) and a self-healing cutting mat. If you’re doing clothing, spend some money on good quality scissors – use a Joann’s half-off coupon on Gingher dress-maker scissors, in my experience they are wonderful scissors.
To save yourself lots of frustration, look for a coupon to take your “old clunker” in for a servicing. They will clean it, calibrate, test your bobbin, and make sure it’s oiled and working well. There is NOTHING more frustrating than getting ready to sew your project and having your sewing machine start to eat the fabric, create thread “nests” on the back, or worst of all, simply stop working mid-way through. It’s worth the $50 to $60 cost. :)
I’m actually thinking maybe I should get myself a new one? Any tips on what things I should look for when purchasing a new sewing machine?
