Chalkboard Wood Bats ~ Happy October!! I’m so excited to be sharing my first Halloween craft of the season! YAY! I bought Mums (chrysanthemums) a few weeks ago to decorate outside. They are my favorite fall flowers! Since they will be staying on my front porch for Halloween, I wanted to add something to them to decorate them for the occasion. What better way to decorate them than with planter decorations!
Chalkboard Wood Bats
– Wood (I used wood scraps that were lying around at my parents’ garage.)
– Sandpaper and/or file.
– Chalkboard paint
– Foam brush
– White chalk
– Scroll saw
– Drill or drill press
Step 1: Fold a piece of paper in half and draw half a bat along the fold. Step 2: Cut out your drawing.
Step 3: Take out the wood that you’ll be using for your project.
Step 4: Trace your bat onto the piece of wood. (I traced two bats on my piece, one of which was smaller than the original.) Step 5: Use a scroll saw to cut out the shapes. (Thanks Mom and Emily for cutting them out for me.) Step 6: Once the pieces are cut, use sandpaper and a file to smooth them out.
Step 7: With the help of a drill press or drill, drill a hole deep enough so that a dowel will fit inside. Step 8: Put a little bit of wood glue inside the hole, on the tip of the dowel, and insert it inside the hole.
Step 8: Once the glue has dried, apply two coats of chalkboard paint. (Make sure to let it dry between coats.)
Step 9: Use chalk to draw eyes on the bats. (I also made a Halloween sign.) Step 10: Insert them inside your planters. And ENJOY!
Now you can’t say those aren’t cute?!
I can’t wait to make more! I’m thinking of making ghosts too! Wouldn’t ghosts be cute?
