Staying active during the winter – Broomball

I try to stay as active as possible, even during the cold winter months. Just because it’s cold out, doesn’t mean you can’t go outside and play a sport!

Ever since I was 13, I’ve spent basically every single weekend of winter playing outdoor broomball with my family.

OMG! I just did the math.. and I’ve been playing for over 20 years! WOW!!

We start our outdoor season right after New Year’s and we play until it starts to warm up and we no longer have ice to play on.

Usually the season ends around the end of February, however it’s been so cold here that we are actually still playing!

Stay active during the winter, broomball is a great winter sport!

My team has always consisted of my family: my Mom and Dad, my sisters.

Along the years our boyfriends/husbands have joined the team. Even my father-in-law has played with us for many years!

The rest of our team consists of friends we’ve made along the years. These friends are just like family!

I honestly think we have the best team, not that we win all our games… but the best team in terms of having fun together no matter if we win or lose.

We’ve been playing together for years and years, so long that we are actually now the oldest team in the tournaments.

Our ages range from 25 to 65… yep! We used to be called Stanbridge East (my hometown), until the other teams renamed us Old Stanbridge after the arrival of a younger team from my hometown, which are now called Young Stanbridge (they are the green team seen in the above photo).

Since we are all getting older, we are also noticing that we have more aches and pains after our games are over….. especially when we’ve played 5 games in one day and that the ice is extra slippery!

I’ve been taking Orange Naturals Turmeric (acts as an anti-inflammatory to help relieve joint pain) and Orange Naturals Magnesium (amazing muscle relaxant) when I get home from the broomball tournaments.

The combination of both has been helping me wake up refreshed and no more aching.

The tournaments we play in are friendly tournaments, we’ve been playing against each other for years and we basically know every player that plays.

As many of you know, my Dad had heart surgery last year to remove an ascending aorta aneurysm (AAA) along with replacing a deformed aorta valve.

During my Dad’s last broomball game last year, we were playing against the strongest team. It was a great game, but we were losing.

Since everyone knew it was going to be my Dad’s last broomball game for a while, all the broomball players from the other teams that were watching the game from the sidelines jumped on the ice to help us out. haha

It was such a touching moment! It meant so much to my Dad, and to all of us.

It was a caring gesture, showing how everyone cared for him, and were going to support him!

Ever since I found out about my Dad’s heart issues, I’ve taken heart health very seriously, that’s one of the reasons why I make sure to stay active and I also take Orange Naturals Omega-3 Fish Oil softgels.

If you read up on Omega-3s, you’ll see that they help to support and maintain heart health!

P.S. I went for a heart ultrasound to see if I had the same issues as my Dad. I’m happy to say that my heart is just fine.

  1. Thanks for sharing such a happy story- Your family reminds me of the Kennedy family with their regular touch football games! And, thanks for the inspiration – Staying active during the winter IS important – I will walk today even though it’s just 28 degrees – warm mittens – big hat – and lots of layers – it will be lovely!

  2. How brave of you! I like to go for walks in the snow, but I don’t think I could handle all that rough-housing in the middle of winter. Of course, I might be a bit of a pansy, too lol

Would love to try ONatural products and will!

  4. Thank you for explaining this. I actually have a bottle of turmeric that a brand sent me – different brand than this and I have used it before workouts but I have no real clue how it works or what it does. Now I know!! I have never played broom ball but that looks pretty fun!
