DIY Paint Stick Flower Basket – Paint Stick Craft
DIY Paint Stick Flower Basket is such a fun DIY project. Limited supplies needed to build it and probably the best part is that it takes no time to make!
DIY Paint Stick Flower Basket

A while back I was surfing Pinterest (one of my favorite activities). As I was surfing I came across this pin, a beautiful DIY Paint Stick Basket made by Build-Basic.
I fell in love with the project instantly! I love how it was simple, yet so beautiful. Don’t you agree? This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.
DIY Paint Sticks
To make the project I needed paint sticks. Sounds easy enough right? Well, in my case.. not so much.
I went to my local hardware store and asked if they had any paint stirrers I could purchase. The project called for 20 paint stirrers and quite honestly, I was a little shy to ask for them for free.
The employee told me that didn’t have any for sale, but would gladly give some to me. She asked me how many I needed and as soon as I said 20, she gave me big eyes and started searching for some.
She could only find 10 to give me. I didn’t turn down the 10 she gave me, however I knew I didn’t have enough to make a flower basket.
I searched in my paint supplies and I found 3 lying around. Again, not enough… plus they weren’t the same size. Seems like one hardware store to another they make them differently.
Lucky for me, my sweet husband came to the rescue and offered to make me paint sticks! Isn’t he great?
Ends up my local hardware store also didn’t have the ½ inch square dowel I needed for the project, so Sébastien offered to make that for me as well. Seriously, how lucky am I?! :)
The only thing I had to do was use my jigsaw to cut them down to the 3 different sizes needed for the project.

Ok, so they don’t have the little dips in them like real paint sticks, but honestly it’s not like I need them to make the flower baskets.
Staining Paint Stirrers
Using the same staining technique I’ve used in the past, I stained the pieces.

Assembling the Flower Basket
After all my pieces were stained and ready to go, it was time to assemble the pieces together in order to make the sides and then attaching them together with the floor.
Now, I must admit that I followed the instructions, except I skipped the gluing part for the first few.
THEN I realized how important it was to glue first! The pieces kept popping out as I stapled, obviously they needed the glue for the extra strength.
I removed the staples I had already put in, and proceeded to add glue BEFORE stapling. So much better!

And voilà, I had my very own basket! I added 6 mason jars inside the flower basket and filled them with lilacs from my lilac bush.

Psst… want to see some beautiful close up shots of the lilacs?

I had to plug-in those photos, I just love how they turned out. hehe
Smaller Flower Basket for 2 Mason Jars
Now because I had accepted the 10 paint sticks from my local hardware store, I decided to make a smaller version of the paint stick flower basket.
It’s the perfect size to hold 2 mason jars.
To build these smaller versions, I used the same dimensions as the sides I built with Build-Basic’s plan. The sides became the front and the actual sides of this basket was 5″. The 4 floor pieces were 4 3/4″.

I’m so happy with how the flower basket turned out. Don’t you find it pretty too?

If you are looking for a DIY planter box instead, we made one of those too. It’s completely solid, so you can plant things directly in it. You can also add mason jars instead and use it to display freshly cut flowers.
These paint stick flower baskets are really worth trying to make!
I really hope that I have inspired you to DIY something too!
Have yourself a FABULOUS day!

P.S. I’ll be linking to these Parties.

This turned out so beautiful! I’ll have to file it away as a possibly cheap or free way to decorate that looks classy. Do you think you would be able to use screws or an electric screwdriver (is that what they’re called?) for this instead of staples?
And if you don’t have a husband to cut wood down, any Lowes or Home Depot has either paint stirrers or will cut down any wood you buy to your measurments.

Love! I swear I’ve seen packs of paint stirrers for sale and now watch the stores make a liar out of me when someday I actually go back into one! What a great idea and perfect timing w/ Mother’s Day coming up. Featuring when my link party opens up!
