Learn how to fix a loose thread. How to stop loose thread from unraveling.
I bought Emanuelle a new outfit two weeks ago for her daycare photos. The outfit is ADORABLE!!
The day before the photos I took the outfit out and layed it on her bed and noticed a loose thread!! UGH!!!
That just irritates me, it’s a brand new outfit, never been worn, and there’s a thread that’s unraveling which will cause the hem to come apart.
Obviously, at this point I have no time to go back and exchange it and second of all.. I would look kind weird returning an outfit just because of a hem that’s letting go.
So I took out my little sewing kit and fixed it.
How to fix a loose thread
Fixing a loose thread is pretty easy, but I figured that not everyone knows how to do it.
Please note that I’m not a professional when it comes to sewing. haha This is my method on how to fix loose thread. There’s probably a better way to do it but this way works for me.
Instructions
Step 1: Take out a matching spool of thread and cut a long piece of thread.
Knot the new thread to the old thread, make sure to make the knot as close to the hem as possible.
You are adding thread to the existing thread because obviously it’s no longer long enough to re-thread and sew the hem back together and be able to make a knot at the end when you are done.
I usually use polyester thread. However if you aren’t sure what type of thread to use, this post how to choose thread may be helpful to you.
Step 2: At the knot, cut off the old loose thread.
Step 3: Thread a needle.
Step 4: Sew your new thread to make a hem where there’s no longer one and make a knot at the end.
If you have a loose thread on the opposite end, repeat the above steps again, and make a knot at the end to stop thread from unraveling.

And voilà, you have a fixed hem.
As soon as I get Emanuelle’s photos from daycare, I will share them with you. :)
If you want to learn more about sewing. I have great sewing tutorials for beginners. I also have a great tutorial on how to make a rope bowl.
Hope you have one FABULOUS day!

Christine, I needed this info just last week! Pinning to my Sewing board so I'll have it whenever I need it. I always say, I'd rather make a whole new garment than mend; but mend I must from time to time!
