Upcycle It Projects

Again this year I will be joining fellow bloggers with the At Home DIY Challenges.

Like last year, there will be challenges throughout the year with different themes.

This month’s At Home DIY Challenge theme is Upcycle It Projects!

I love upcyle projects!

We had a similar theme last year. I had upcycled frames into a headboard for my daughter.

I even shared 12 upcycled home decor ideas too!

For this year’s upcycle project, I decided to upcycle a rug I have had for about 5 years.

It’s a beautiful bright and colorful chindi rug. I purchased it for under $10.

I wasn’t quite sure where I would put it, but the colors where calling to me. Since it wasn’t expensive I purchased it.

When I found out this month’s challenge was going to be an upcycle, I knew right away I wanted to upcycle the rug into a wall hanging.

A few years back, I put together a stunning wall art inspiration post where I featured over 38 wall art ideas.

One of those projects was a wall weave from Colour Saturated Life. She had upcycled a rug into a wall art. It was beautiful. I would have loved to link it to this post, but unfortunately her blog no longer exists.

Anyways, that’s where I got the inspiration to make my rug wall hanging.

How to upcycle a rug into a wall hanging

Supplies:

  • Rug – 32″ x 20″ (Small rug like a Chindi Rug.)
  • Dowel – 26″
  • Hook and loop fasteners on a roll with adhesive tape
  • Rope 100% cotton
  • Yarn
  • Strips of paper (optional)
  • Tape (optional)

Tools:

  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun

Yarn to make tassels to decorate rug.

Instructions:

Step 1: Add hook and loop fastener on the back of the top portion of the rug.

If there’s a tag on the back, cut it off to avoid bulkiness.

Remove tag from rug.

I used Scotch Fasteners Extreme hook and loop fasteners that has adhesive tape on the back. It holds up to 10 lbs.

Attach hook and loop fasteners.

I measured the amount of hook and loop fastener I would need and cut it to size.

I locked that piece onto the roll and cut another piece of the hook and loop fastener from the roll.

Lock both fasteners together.

I removed the backing from one side of the adhesive tape and attached it to the back top portion of the rug.

Step 2: Fold rug over dowel to figure out the placement of the other side of the hook and loop fastener.

Add dowel to rug.

Attach it by removing the backing of the adhesive tape.

Step 3: Add rope to the dowel by making knots on each end. Hang the wall hanging.

Step 4: Position small strips of paper onto the rug in various locations with tape.

This is to give a general idea of where to place the tassels that will be added to the rug to give it a fun look.

Step 5: Make 15 tassels to attach to the rug.

We chose to make the tassels using colors from the rug.

Each tassel requires 5x 8″ strands of yarn and 1x 4″ strand of yarn.

Supplies to make yarn tassels
Yarn to make larks knot

Fold the 5 strands in half.

Find middle of yarn

Loop the center of the 5 strands over the 4″ strand and tuck the ends of the strands inside the loop making a lark’s head knot. (It’s the same method we used to make the yarn wall hanging however instead of looping over a dowel, we looped over a strand of yarn.)

Place small piece of yarn behind the strands

Loop yarn over the strand
Pull strands through the loop

Tighten it by pulling.

We then knotted the ends of the 4″ strands together.

Step 6: Hot glue tassels onto the rug.

We laid the rug wall hanging flat and proceeded to hot glue the tassels where we had placed the white strips.

We put glue directly on the rug and placed the tassels on the hot glue with the knots in the back.

I’m heading to a store tomorrow where I think they sell those kind of rugs. I’m visiting from Over the Moon. I shared a printable and wreath, #19 and #20. Enjoy your week and thanks for the idea!!

  2. I have a very similar rug downstairs in our storage room. We are currently giving our grandchildren’s bedroom at Grandma & Grandpa’s house a makeover and I’m looking for wall art ideas. This is so happening in that room – thank you for the inspiration! Pinned

  3. I love this idea. In fact, I’ve got a rug rolled up in the corner that I couldn’t bear to part with but it’s not practical on the floor anywhere as it’s a tripping hazard for my 90-year-old mom. I can’t want to see if this might work with that rug.

  4. Such a fun and colourful project Christine.
I’m so glad that you shared it at Create, Bake, Grow & Gather this week. I’m delighted to be featuring your up-cycled rug wall hanging at tomorrows party and pinning too.
